― What made you decide to join HighChem?

I was drawn to the position of technical sales because it allows me to leverage my technical expertise while also being involved in sales activities. Understanding the real-world business flow and societal impact intrigued me. Additionally, since my roots are in China, I found the prospect of working closely with China appealing.

―What is your current job?

Currently, in the C1 Business Unit, I focus on technology development related to CO/CO2 using our core technology, ethylene glycol. Specifically, I drive projects related to the three main approaches for decarbonization: Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), bio-based solutions, and recycling.

As part of national projects, we’re involved in the development of “Paraxylene production using CO2 as raw material” and “Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production from non-standard coconuts.” Internally, we’re also working on projects related to biotechnology-based chemicals and slow-release biodegradable fertilizers. Additionally, I handle the planning of eco-friendly chemicals and green chemistry products, constantly incorporating new knowledge and trends while driving both new initiatives and existing projects.

― What are the rewarding aspects of working at HighChem?
【Autonomy, Highly Specialized Colleagues, and a Spirit of Challenge】

Firstly, the significant level of autonomy in our work stands out. In the projects I handle, I have the freedom to drive them in directions I’ve thought through. This level of autonomy is not common in large corporations. However, it also brings the anxiety of wondering whether my approach is truly correct and whether I might unintentionally mislead others. I now understand the words my supervisor shared when I was a new graduate: “As a team leader, you’ll need to constantly question whether your approach is right.”

Next, having colleagues with expertise across various fields is invaluable. Their specialized knowledge spans everything from understanding global markets to technical intricacies, business history, and future prospects. Some colleagues have deep backgrounds in specific technical domains. Being able to consult with these peers contributes to my learning and provides advice on how to approach our work effectively.

Lastly, the opportunity to genuinely pursue challenges is essential. HighChem is currently in an expansion phase, where we balance existing responsibilities while swiftly seizing chances that could lead to new ventures. This environment allows me to approach my work with true satisfaction.

― What do you value in your work?

Firstly, I prioritize building connections with people. At HighChem, we believe that even if the immediate task doesn’t yield direct results, establishing trust with others is an achievement in itself. In practice, once trust is established, it can lead to success in other projects. Particularly since our business often involves China, initial skepticism from partners is not uncommon. However, through sincere and professional work on each project, I’ve gained trust from numerous companies. Some of these projects even involve national initiatives, and the view that emerges from valuing these connections is truly transformative.

Secondly, I emphasize continuous learning. HighChem offers diverse roles across various fields, and sometimes an overwhelming amount of information floods in (which can feel like my brain is about to explode, to be honest!). Yet, this demand for information processing and knowledge absorption is essential. With this foundation, absorbing insights from colleagues and external sources benefits both the company and individual. It’s a win-win situation.

― What do you want to challenge yourself with in the future?

The development projects I’m responsible for are numerous, and each project has the potential to lead to significant business success if commercialized. I aspire to contribute to HighChem’s goal of achieving one trillion yen in revenue by successfully commercializing these development projects. As a business development professional, I want to experience the satisfaction of taking a technology seed from concept to a product or service that penetrates the market. Perhaps in one’s professional life, not many engineers get to savor such a sense of accomplishment.

In addition to individual technical skills and perseverance, external factors like teamwork and the momentum of the times are also crucial. I look forward to facing various challenges while riding the global wave on a stage provided by a company like HighChem.
